Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid with a characteristic composition, since it has two nitrogenous chains (one amino group and another amido).
It is the most abundant amino acid in the blood and striated muscle, participating in numerous biochemical processes:
- It is a primordial energy source, donating hydrocarbon chains especially in muscle, lymphocytes, kidney and intestinal epithelial cells.
- It participates as a primordial substrate in hepatic neoglucogenesis while being part of the urea cycle.
- The generation of ammonium allows the synthesis of other amino acids, such as alanine and aspartate, through transamination reactions in muscle, intestine and liver.
- The deamination of glutamate generates nicotin adenosin dehydrogenase (NADPH), involved in the regeneration of glutathione.
- Along with alanine is the transporter of nitrogen to the kidney
